FCC commissioner demands more mid-band 5G spectrum


At NYU's annual 5G Summit in Brooklyn today, FCC commissioner Michael O'Rielly issued a fiery call for his own commission to release more 'mid-band' spectrum for 5G wireless carriers, adding to a chorus of other commissioners saying that wireless carriers need this spectrum to compete. Mid-band spectrum, which in this conversation means between 2-8Ghz, is considered to be a sweet spot for 5G services because it has enough range that you don't need to put a cell site every few blocks, but potentially wide enough channel sizes for high speeds.
