Students Take Their Skills to the Virtual Battlefield in First Cyber STRIKE Exercise
New York University’s inaugural Cyber STRIKE training exercise put the school’s first cohort of NY Cyber Fellowship students to the test, pitting them against a smaller team of red-clad professionals from New York City’s Cyber Command (NYC3). Though as NYC Chief Information Security Officer and NYC3 head Geoff Brown explained, the two groups were more allies than rivals. … The exercise, which took place March 11-12 in NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering building, also marked the launch of the city’s first cyber range, a virtual environment used to train cyber defenders to face real-life scenarios of detecting and mitigating active attacks. Simulation exercises are an important part of training security professionals to handle real attacks, said Nasir Memon, professor of computer science and engineering at NYU Tandon.
