MOT Global

Through a partnership between NYU Tandon and NYU Shanghai, newly admitted MOT students have the option of pursuing their first-semester coursework at NYU Shanghai and then traveling to New York for the completion of their degree. This program, known as MOT Global, will be attractive to students who are interested in having a unique two-campus, international study experience for their master’s degree. Students will live in Shanghai, be enrolled full-time during their MOT Global semester, and enjoy a special cohort-based experience.

Tandon will offer the following courses at NYU Shanghai. All are required courses within the MOT core curriculum and will count toward a student’s degree requirements. If your participation is confirmed, your MOT advisor will de-enroll any courses you may have already registered for in New York and enroll you in the courses below. Participating students must take and continue in all of these courses; once your semester in Shanghai has started, you may not drop them.

All students must (i) be admitted to begin their program in Fall 2024, (ii) commit to relocate and live in Shanghai during the Fall semester, and (iii) enroll in all of the courses offered at NYU Shanghai. Following the Fall semester, you will travel to New York for the Spring 2025 semester and complete the remainder of your degree in New York. 

The MOT Global program can accommodate a maximum of 30 students. If interest among students exceeds this number, a lottery will be used to select participants.

Students who are Chinese Nationals or Mainland entry permit holders from Macau, Taiwan, or Hong Kong should not require university documentation to clear immigration and gain entry to China.

Students Who Will Require Chinese Visas

Shanghai Student Mobility, in cooperation with the Office of Global Services in New York will initiate the visa process, collecting all immigration documents from students and passing them to the Shanghai Student Mobility team. Shanghai Student Mobility will then work with the local Chinese embassy/consulate to process and send documents back to OGS. Incoming international students will need to hold a passport valid for at least six months for entry. Students are advised to begin their visa application as early as possible since the visa processing time may vary from country to country. Students who will require Chinese visas for travel to Shanghai are advised to contact OGS in NY directly. Students Who Will Require US Visas to Travel to New York following your MOT Global semester in Shanghai

The first day of classes during the Spring 2024 semester at Tandon in New York will be January 23, 2024. Participating students should apply to Get a US Visa at least 3-4 months before the start of the Spring 2024 semester so that they can have their immigration documents to travel to New York after the Fall semester at NYU Shanghai concludes. If you already have your I-20 and need it updated to reflect your Spring 2024 entry to the US, please submit the Entry Plan form so OGS can adjust your document.

Is MOT Global the same as the Go Local in Shanghai program?

No, MOT Global is not the same as the Go Local in Shanghai program that ran from Fall 2020 through Spring 2022. MOT Global is a completely new program, developed from the partnership between NYU Tandon and NYU Shanghai.

May I complete my entire program at NYU Shanghai? Besides my first semester, will there be any other time during which I could study at NYU Shanghai?

Students may only complete one semester (their first semester) at NYU Shanghai with the remainder of their degree to be completed at Tandon in New York starting with the Spring term. Study at NYU Shanghai may only be undertaken in one’s first semester. There is no option to study at NYU Shanghai in subsequent terms.

Although rare, participating students who happen to have trouble securing a student visa for their Spring 2024 transition to New York City will be permitted to continue their studies in the online MS MOT program.

What is the academic calendar for Fall 2023 at NYU Shanghai?

The first day of classes at NYU Shanghai will be August 28th and the last day on December 8th. Final exam week will take place from December 11-15th. Holidays will be observed for the Mid-Autumn Festival (September 29th - October 6th), and Thanksgiving (November 23rd-24th).

Are there residential facilities at NYU Shanghai?

NYU Shanghai does not currently have a dedicated graduate student residential facility. Unoccupied rooms in NYU Shanghai’s undergraduate residential facility might be offered to students on a space-available basis, but this will not be known until late Summer. Just like they would in New York, many students will desire the flexibility to find and arrange their own off-campus housing. The city of Shanghai features an abundance of housing options to suit various lifestyles and budgets.

What is the student community at NYU Shanghai like?

More than 2000 students make their home at NYU Shanghai every year, including hundreds of graduate students pursuing master’s and PhD degrees in various disciplines. These opportunities are made possible through partnerships with other NYU schools, such as the Graduate School of Arts & Science, School of Professional Studies, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Stern School of Business, Tisch School of the Arts, and others.

Will there be any difference in the cost of tuition?

Tuition will be the same whether you study in New York City or in Shanghai.

If I participate in MOT Global, will I still be eligible for OPT / CPT in the United States?

Yes, students who require a student visa to study in the United State will be able to apply for OPT / CPT. Two academic-year semesters (Fall / Spring) in the United States are required on a F-1 visa before one can qualify for off campus employment. Thus, if you participate in MOT Global, your first semester of eligibility for off campus employment would be Spring 2025, following enrollment in Spring 2024 and Fall 2024 as your two academic-year semesters in the United States.
