How to Defer, Withdraw, or Swap

Bridge students are able to defer their enrollment to a future semester, withdraw their enrollment, or swap program durations by submitting the "Defer/Withdraw/Swap" Form by the given deadlines. Who should I contact to request a deferral or withdrawal?

The only way to request a deferral or withdrawal from the Bridge Program is to complete the Defer/Withdrawal/Swap Form found on your Applicant Status page. We are unable to process deferral or withdrawal requests over the phone or by email.

Please note that our deferral deadline for the Winter session is 1/31/23. 

How many times can I defer my enrollment?

Bridge students are able to defer their enrollment up to one year from their original offer of admission to the Bridge program. Students may only defer to a different semester once - multiple deferrals are not permitted. 

What happens if I defer my acceptance?

Shortly after deferring, you will be removed from the course and lose access to the course site. Before the start of your deferral semester, you will receive a new admission email and you will need to re-accept your offer at that time if you wish to pursue the program.

Do I still owe tuition if I defer my acceptance? 

If you defer on or before the deadline, you will receive a full refund for payments that you have made, all outstanding balances will be removed from your account, and you will not owe any future payments.

If you enroll in the Bridge Program for the semester in which you have deferred to, you will owe the cost of tuition being charged for that semester, which may be higher than the cost that was being charged for the semester you deferred from.

What happens if I withdraw before the deadline?

Shortly after deferring, you will be removed from the course and lose access to the course site. If you would like to retake the Bridge Program at a future time, you can refer to that process in the Retaking the Bridge course section below.

Do I still owe tuition if I withdraw before the deadline?

If you withdraw on or before the deadline, you will receive a full refund for payments that you have made, all outstanding balances will be removed from your account, and you will not owe any future payments.

What happens if I withdraw after the deadline?

If you withdraw after the deadline, all outstanding balances and all future payments will become immediately due.

Are you able to issue partial refunds/pro-rate payments?

No. We cannot issue partial refunds or pro-rate payments. If you are enrolled in the course after the defer/withdrawal deadline, you owe the full cost of the course. We cannot issue full or partial refunds, no exceptions. 

What if I am unable to pay for tuition?   

If you remain enrolled, or if you withdraw after the deadline, and you do not submit payment, your account will default to third-party collections and you will be subject to late fees. 

Students enrolled in a Bridge course with both 17-week and 24-week durations can swap from the 17-week to 24-week course (or vice-versa) for up to two weeks after the first exam. The Swap deadline for your specific Bridge course is provided in the Academic Calendar above.

How can I request a term swap?  

You can request a term swap by submitting the Defer/Withdraw/Swap Form found on your Applicant Status page. 

How soon do I have access to the new course?  

Your new course will take at least 24 hours to appear in NYU Brightspace. Swap requests made 5 days prior to the first exam cannot be accommodated and will be completed the day following your exam. 

Will my professor reach out to me regarding my swap?

Once you have access to your new course, it is your responsibility to contact your professors and TA’s in order to have them adjust your Gradescope and Piazza accounts to reflect your new term duration.  

All questions related to course material surrounding the duration swap must be directed to your professors or TA’s within the course site.

If the defer/withdrawal deadline for your course has passed, and you are interested in retaking the Bridge Program in a future term, you may choose to do so. Students who are currently enrolled and wish to take the course must

1) Submit the withdrawal form found on your Applicant Status page to become eligible to re-apply.
2) Re-apply by submitting a Bridge Application by the deadline for the course you wish to retake.

If I retake the course in a future semester, will I still owe tuition?

Yes. You will owe tuition on both the withdrawn course and the future course. Tuition paid or owed for a current or past course cannot be applied toward tuition for any future courses. 

I am a Bridge Alumni. Am I able to retake the course?

Yes. Bridge Alumni who wish to retake the course can submit a Bridge Application by the deadline for the course you wish to take. You will be responsible for the entire course fee for the course you are retaking.
