Civil Engineering Students Recognized by National Organization

The entire NYU Tandon community congratulates the members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams, who were recently cited in a letter of honorable mention from the national organization for their outstanding activities.

The teams have a long history of excellence and podium finishes in the annual challenges: The Steel Bridge Competition, sponsored by the ASCE and the American Institute of Steel Construction, requires students to conceive, design, fabricate, erect, and test a steel structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy. In the process, they gain a heightened awareness of real-world engineering issues, including spatial constraints, material properties, strength, serviceability, safety, aesthetics, and project management. The ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition tasks students with designing, building, and racing a vessel that will float — despite being made of a material that laypeople assume would sink upon being placed in water.

Additionally, chapter members have been lauded for their activities throughout the year, including holding workshops for high school students, participating in community cleanup projects, organizing field trips to construction sites, and mounting job fairs and other career-related initiatives.

“The Department of Civil and Urban Engineering is proud of the students who take on so many enriching activities, including difficult but rewarding engineering challenges,” said Department Chair Magued Iskander. “They gain real-world experience and learn the vital importance of collaboration and teamwork to our field. Their consistently fine performance is a testament to both their hard work and the invaluable guidance of their advisors, Weihua Jin and Jose Ulerio.”
