NYU Tandon and C2Smart Host TransportationCamp NYC

On October 21, engineers, planners, students, and technology experts gathered at NYU Tandon’s Brooklyn campus for the 2017 TransportationCamp NYC. The annual “unconference,” which features participant-driven session topics and activities, facilitated unique conversations and ideas around transportation, technology, and mobility.

This year, the Camp was hosted by NYU Tandon and Connected Cities for Smart Mobility toward Accessible and Resilient Transportation (C²SMART). C²SMART, which is led by Civil and Urban Engineering Professor Kaan Ozbay, was recently named a U.S. Department of Transportation Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC) and uses New York City as its testbed for studying and addressing challenges to transportation and urban mobility, and to develop novel solutions through advanced technology and education.

Tra Vu, NYU Tandon adjunct professor of Civil and Urban Engineering and 2017 TransportationCamp co-director, noted that over 400 participants from across the transportation industry joined the collaborative brainstorming sessions, including many NYU Tandon faculty and students. Discussions and presentations revolved around a variety of topics, such as bicycle incentive programs and bicycle friendly-cities, the potential impact of self-driving cars on transit, big data, improving NYC subways, the ferry system, and even encouraging transit advocacy and youth engagement through internet memes.

“TransportationCamp NYC has always been organized by independent volunteers working in the transportation industry as a forum for idea exchange in this area,” shared Shri Iyer, Senior Associate Director at C²SMART. “With Tra’s involvement this year, and the event being hosted here at NYU, we as a center and department supported the event with our institutional resources. In the future, we hope to keep TransportationCamp NYC here at NYU Tandon.”
